CLM's TMS Therapy Program Reaches Service Milestone

Two years ago, CLM began providing TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation) Therapy, a breakthrough non-drug treatment for depression. At that time, CLM was the first free standing community mental health organization in the country to offer this revolutionary, proven effective therapy for depression that utilizes the same magnetic technology used by magnetic resonance imaging.

Recently, CLM's Medical Director, Kevin DiCesare, MD, was designated as a blue circle NeuroStar provider. This designation is given to providers estimated to have performed approximately 500 or more treatments over the past twelve months, which would correspond to treating approximately 20 patients with a typical course of treatment during that period. Designation of a physician with a blue circle is intended to convey information about the estimated frequency of NeuroStar TMS Therapy treatments performed by a given physician.

Since TMS was introduced at CLM, several milestones have been reached in expanding insurance coverage for treatment with the FDA approved NeuroStar TMS technology. According to Vic Topo, CLM President and CEO, "That is very good news that is already having an impact on improving access to this effective new treatment for more depression sufferers. TMS therapy is now being covered by Medicare as well as Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield and Tufts with prior-authorization. We believe this is a good indication that we will see more health plans covering TMS treatment in the future."

CLM Now Offering Reiki for Stress Relief and Wellness

Are you looking for more balance in your life? Are stress management and a better sense of well-being on your list of resolutions this year? To help individuals with these important health goals, CLM is pleased to announce we are now offering Reiki sessions, a healing energy therapy that is a powerful stress reducer that supports overall well-being.

Many ancient cultures embrace the belief that life energy flows through the body, deeply affecting our entire being. Current research strongly suggests that energy does extend through and beyond the physical body, and the disruptions or imbalances in its flow correlate to physical, mental and emotional illness. The gentle healing power of Reiki addresses these imbalances to support good health and well-being.

Reiki treatments at CLM will be provided by Christine Robb, a certified Reiki master. According to Robb, "Reiki is a gentle method of hands-on or hands-off healing that taps into the individual's energy flow." Reiki is not massage, hypnosis or a tool for diagnosing illness. Reiki is a technique that addresses both chronic and acute conditions, gently and powerfully promoting balance among all the body's systems and the regenerative processes of body and mind.

Reiki has been shown to be effective in increasing feelings of relaxation, reduction of physical and emotional pain and other symptoms of discomfort due to illness or imbalance within the body. Used by a rapidly growing number of hospitals and clinics in the United States and around the world, Reiki complements medical treatment, behavioral health services and massage therapy. Reiki is appropriate for individuals in any state of health.

Reiki appointments can be scheduled as 15 / 30 / 45 or 60 minute sessions. Gift certificates are available. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 603.965.1590.

NH Community Behavioral Health Association Unveils Plan for Improved Funding of Mental Health Services
NH Community Behavioral Health Association
On the one-month anniversary of the Sandy Hook elementary school tragedy, the NH Community Behavioral Health Association (NHCBA), representing the state's ten mental health centers including the Center for Life Management, issued a position paper concerning the upcoming state operating budget priorities for addressing an ever-growing mental health crisis. Specifically, the paper outlines the need for and mechanisms required to fund the state's 2008 Ten-Year Mental Health Plan.

Jay Couture, President of the NHCBHA, said, "The last month has seen a horrific escalation of crises in mental health and the failings of our community-based system. A month ago today, the shootings in Newtown, CT shocked our community and also raised the public's concerns about mental health issues. Meanwhile, the direct impacts of cutbacks and the failure to invest in the NH community-based mental health system have intersected in the tragic backups in hospital emergency rooms and in New Hampshire Hospital unmasking this public health crisis." Couture stressed, "The news conference held by NAMI and more than 14 other organizations last week has helped to capture the public's real concerns about the state of mental health in NH."

NAMI-NH Shines Light on the Crisis in NH Mental Health System

At a press conference held at the Legislative Office Building in Concord, NH, on January 7th, the Center for Life Management joined the National Alliance on Mental Illness-New Hampshire (NAMI-NH) to highlight the crisis in the mental health delivery system that has NH adults and children waiting in hospital emergency rooms for an inpatient bed.

The NH Community Behavioral Health Association, representing the state's community mental health centers, partnered with NAMI-NH and a dozen other organizations for the press conference. Louis Josephson, President and CEO of Riverbend Community Mental Health in Concord, spoke for the Association, and made these points:
- The answer to this crisis is not just more beds at NH Hospital - it is building community capacity to reduce the need for inpatient admissions
- Mental health centers are at a loss trying to manage individuals in a mental health crisis who are in hospital emergency departments waiting for admission to NH Hospital
- The need is for community alternatives to inpatient hospitalizations
- NH's community mental health system has seen rate cuts and budget cuts in recent years that have meant fewer resources to manage adults and children with severe mental illness in the community
- The NH Community Behavioral Health Association worked with the NH Department of Health and Human Services, NH Hospital and other partners 6 years ago to develop a Ten- Year Mental Health Plan
- The Ten-Year Plan was praised when it was released in 2008 as the best way to get NH's community- based mental health system, once a model in the nation, back on track
- The Plan is now almost 5 years old and has not been funded or implemented as intended

The NH Community Behavioral Health Association and the Center for Life Management urge state leaders to re-commit to the Ten-Year Plan and to invest in a community-based system that we know from experience works. To do otherwise is to continue to provide barriers to necessary care and an increased risk of harm to some of our most vulnerable residents and their families.
